The route starts by following the valley East to Askrigg and Castle Bolton before heading North to Grinton and Reeth. This section is where the work starts as you are climbing over into Swaledale and then the long climb up and down to Tan Hill (mostly up), the highest pub in England. From then on there is a long descent off the moor and down into the town of Kirkby Stephen.
Landmarks/Pubs for lunch/Sites to see?
The whole route is picturesque with the villages of Askrigg, Castle Bolton, Grinton and Reeth. The countryside is sheep country, nice and green in the valleys and wild and boggy on the moors. Food and accommodation can be found in Castle Bolton, Grinton and Reeth. You must stop for a drink at Tan Hill and a bite to eat because you will need it. Put your top back on for the descent to Kirkby Stephen and get your brake hands working. There is a great view on the way down so make the most of it. |
