This is a road route, from High Bridge to Caldbeck (7 miles) and return via Welton (9 miles), mainly on B roads and country lanes, with one long steep hill. From High Bridge head away from the direction of Stockdalewath and follow the road. At the forked junction go right and follow the road to the T junction. Turn left follow the road, taking the right hand fork on the way. At the T junction turn left onto the B5305, and after a very short distance take the first turning right, signposted to Hesket Newmarket and Calderbeck. Follow this road all the way to Hesket Newmarket. At Hesket Newmarket T-junction turn right, go through the village and follow the road all the way to Caldbeck (about 1 mile). At Caldbeck stop for lunch at the Oddfellows Arms. After lunch go to the right of the pub (facing towards it) and turn RIGHT at the T-junction onto the B5299. Follow the B5299 all the way up a fairly long and steep hill (12%) until you reach the top and a crossroads. Turn right at the crossroads, but still on the B5299, heading immediately down a quite steep hill. Continue to follow the B5299 all the way to the B5305 crossroads. Go straight over the B5305 and continue on the B5299 to Welton (the pub called the Royal Oak Inn is visible to the right). As you enter WELTON take the first turning on the right and follow the road as it curves to the right (ignore the turning left). Quite shortly the road bends left quite sharply and the signpost indicates Sebergham 1 ½. Follow the road until you get to a “WEAK BRIDGEâ€. Turn left and go over this weak bridge. Follow the road until you get to a right turning sign-posted to Sowerby Row 2 ½ . Follow the road until you get to a T-junction. Take the left turning signposted to High Bridge 1 ½ . You are now back at the point where you started to do the loop (point B on the map). Quite shortly take the right turning again signposted to High Bridge and follow the road all the way back to the start. |
