Mendip Mountain Bike Trail 2 Cycle Route
Cycle Steps | |
Starting in Shipham, head south on to Cuck hill and cycle to the first cross roads. Turn left on to Longbottom road.
Cycle just under 1 mile and take the first side road right. Cycling for another half a mile, take the first side road right again, this time onto Warrens Hill Road.
After half a mile the road ends and turns into a trail leading right into Cheddar.
When the path turns into road again, you will arrive at a T-Junction, turn right here and then immediate first left and left again on to Kent Street leading on to Silver Street. Take a right onto Waterlane and 3rd right leading to a T-junction with Cliffs road.
This is where it gets touch, lots of steep climbs on this road. It will be another 3 to 4 miles on this twisty road before you arrive at a fork in the road. Stay left and cycle to the first cross roads.
Turn left here and cycle for another mile and a half, passing through another cross roads, take the immediate left into Rains Batch. This lane turns into a trail once again
Once again another few steep off road climbs. There are clearly defined paths here but you have to be careful to take the right ones. First you will reach the summit, and start to descend a little, you will then reach another peak, at this point you want to take a path off to the right, almost doubling back on yourself. If you are unclear please see the map.
Follow this path down and around following the contours of the hill until you arrive in Burrington Ham. When you meet up with the first proper path turn left and cycle along the trail going through Rowberrow Warren.
In the forest there is a nice technical trail but once again involves some climbing. Please refer to map for exact details but if you stay on the path it will take you out more or less where you started.
Coming out of the forest turn left on to Doleberrow road and follow it until it crosses the A38. Cross here and keep heading West onto The Batch road. You should be able to find a path just off here that goes around Sandfordhill. This takes you out on Quarry road in Sandford.
Turn left onto the Sandford road. Cycle south for 1 mile and turn right at the cross roads onto Woodborough road, and then first left onto Churchroad. Turn right onto Barton road and then right again quarter of a mile later.
Cycle north along Max Mill lane, turning left at the T-Junction on to Christon road. Take the 2nd right and then first left onto Brideswell labe crossing the motorway. Take the 2nd left and head south following sign posts to Loxton.
After the post office in Loxton take first left heading east back over the motorway. After crossing the bridge take first left at the cross roads. This takes you onto a nice stretch over Compton hill. Once again though, more steep climbs.
Freewheeling down the other side follow the path south until you arrive in Cross Moor where you turn left on to the A371 leading back through Axbridge and then left to Shipham.
