Ideal route if you travel to Ormskirk by Train. Get off at Ormskirk Station (there are toilets here). Walk the bike to the ring road and then turn right - walk about 300 yards until you come to the Police Station and then turn right. Now you can start cycling. The first part is on roads and the A59 can get busy so would suggest hi visibility clothing. Stay on A59 until you get to the bridge over the Leeds Liverpool Canal - use the steps to get onto the tow path (you really should have a British waterways pass - they are free). Then cycle the canal where you will pass a couple of good pubs (can recommend the Ship Inn) until you come to Maghull where you can get off at the Royal Bank of Scotland - small bridge over the canal. On the Lydiate road turn right at traffic lights and go past Maghull shopping centre (toilets in car park) and then turn right on to A59. Part the way up the A59 is a cycle path which will take you into Ormskirk and then follow map/signs to station. Nice, flat pleasant ride which should take about 2 -3 hours. Please watch out for walkers on the canal | |
