This is a pleasant road route, on a mix of roads, that apart from the very first and last sections, does not suffer from too many cars. In the first half of the route there is a steady uphill climb, all the way to Houghton Tower. Then there is a fast downhill section, for a couple of miles, before changing to a sharp ascent from Roach Birdge. There is then a flat (but, usually against the wind push!) into Higher Walton!. | |

One of my favorite short routes, to do solo or with a buddy or two. A slight extension (from the same start)make your way down towards Wigan Lane and pick the start up from Sandy Lane. You should be nicely warmed up and ready for the couple of hills, which really makes you appreciate the down hill from Hoghton tower back to Higher Walton (if you dont have a head wind then enjoy reaching 30mph with ease!).
