1. A 2 - 3 hour ride mainly on quiet B roads with little traffic. Take the direct route from Burgess Hill to Haywards Heath via Jane's Lane. It's the quietest of the three roads.
Go past the train station in Haywards Heath past the post sorting office and turn right at the end of the road. Continue this way to the top of the very picturesque Lindfield village, with it's famous duck pond. If you want to see the pond, turn down the hill for a 200 meter detour.
Turn when you see the signs for Danehill. This is a tree covered lane with a few quite steep hills. If it's a dark day - I put my back lights on here for safety.
Then turn left at the sign for Horsted Keynes. Through the town and follow the road all the way to Lewes Road - where you see a sign saying you've reached Ashdown Forest.
At Wych Cross, you will see the Lama and information centre (a strange mix). You can get a nice tea, coffee and something to eat there.
You're heading back now. At Nutley, turn just after the church (careful - it's a small road that's easy to miss as you're heading down hill).
The road to Fletchling is just perfect. I didn't see a single car.
Finally through the Chailey's. Turn at South Street - past the school. Down Honeypot Lane and Streat Road until you are back in Burgess Hill. |
