1. Scenic road-bike tour of the East side of Harpenden via Whitwell, Codicote and Welwyn, mainly on country lanes and through farming villages.
Suitable for those looking for something more than a leisurely weekend ride or as a start to longer distance training.
The route takes in some great long downhills - although, like a free lunch, there's also no such thing as a free downhill, so expect a few climbs in there too. Be careful on the left hand turn out of Kimpton - follow signs for Whitwell.
For slightly less busy roads round Welwyn (but an extra mile or two distance), follow signs for the city centre then Stanborough. Come down the hill with Stanborough lakes on either side, straight over roundabout, under the A1, then follow signs for Harpenden at next roundabout, shortly after which you'll rejoin the route mapped.
Should take roughly 2 hours at a decent peg (15-16mph average) |
