1. A nice steady all-road route, on a mix of main and country roads, that goes through some of the National Forest towns and villages. It is suitable for all bikes, and riders of all fitness levels and experience. There is a long, relatively steep, decline (approx 1/2 mile)at Darklands Rd, Swadlincote. A right turn then a nice mile long flat along William Nadin Way, a left turn at the first island and then a right at the immediate next island towards Cadley Hill. Caution to be taken when crossing the A444 at Cadley Hill as it is a trunk road and does get very busy here. Straight over the island (a gentle climb here)and along the road for approximately 2 miles (follow the signs to Rosliston along here as it's very easy to veer off towards Caldwell!) then a left turn at the cross roads towards Rosliston. Travel through Rosliston village and turn right along the country road towards Coton in the Elms, following the signs to Overseal/Netherseal. A 3-4 mile meander along the scenic country roads now follows as you make your way through Grangewood towards Overseal. There are gentle inclines and declines througout this stretch but all are easily manageable.Once at Overseal cross the busy A444 and continue straight on, heading along Woodville Road, there's a gentle climb and then descent as you approach Spring Cottage. It would be advisable to take advantage of this descent at this point because as you approach Spring Cottage there is a long steepish incline (1/2 - 3/4 mile)past the Navigation Inn. At the end of the road (if you have any breath left!) turn left, climb gently up Reservoir Hill and then turn right towards Woodville. Carry straight on for a mile and a half, you will arrive at a small but very busy island (toll gate or clock island as it's known locally) where the A511 and A514 meet. Join the A511 here (taking extreme caution as it's a 5 way island) back towards Midway (1-1.5 miles) to Finish! The real beauty of this route is you can start it anywhere along its length. If you're in the car you could park at Swadlincote, Rosliston Forestry Centre or CONKERS, where you can join the route after a short ride to Spring Cottage Road. |
