1. This continues from the previous section at Woodhead Station. After an initial steep climb the rest of the journey is more flat to undulating. The route is largely disused rail tracks forming the Transpennine Trail.
Note some sections have flooded in the past due to their proximity to the River Dearne, but this is rare!
Pass over Bullhouse Bridge, where there was an accident where a carriage derailed in 1884. This area now forms part of the (train free) cycle path.
On then to Penniston, then Oxspring for a minor road section. Where Coates Lane and Jockey Road cross there is a pub called the Travellers Inn (postcode S36 8YJ)
Dove Valley Trail which takes you over the M1 (on a bridge so you can watch the congestion). Then into Worsbrough where, should you fancy a small stop/detour, you can come off at Park Road and visit Button Mill Inn (S70 5LJ) or Worsbrough Mill and Country Park.
Pass through Wombwell to South and Darfield to North. Just come off for refreshments, Wombell High Street is just south, exit at Station Road (B6096) there are also a few pubs around here.
Briefly on road section at Harlington. You will rejoin at the end of Mill Lane, which isn't sign posted, too Pass the Earth Centre and on through Connisbrough including the viaduct.
Then towards Sprotbrough where you can stop off at the Boat Inn (DN5 7NB), which is just by Sprotbrough Falls. |
