Cycle Steps
1. This description covers a mixed route of canal towpaths, country lanes and roads, that is mainly flat, but with one tough climb. The map initially shows a route from Reading to Goring mainly on country lanes. Within 100 yards of Reading train station, pick up the towpath on the north bank of the Thames at Reading Bridge, George Street, B3345. A mile or two after leaving the traffic of Caversham it feels like you’re far out in the countryside to Mapledurham. The trail then leads to the picturesque village of Whitchurch-on-Thames. Following tracks along the edge of the Thames, blasting through English woodlands to Goring/Streatley in order to come round to the other bank of the river to return to Pangbourne, then go through the attractive village of Sulham via quiet lanes. This one may be a tough climb but it is worth it for the views. The final stretch follows the towpath from Theale, the number 4 cycle route, stopping for lunch and thirst quenching drink at Cunning Man pub, and then the only rumble comes, inevitably, when you’re back in the town centre.
