Today's ride follows mountain rivers, which together with the mountain back drops, provide magnificent scenery.
Head back (north) to re-join the main AS114 and then head east towards Panes. The road follows the Rio Cares and there are some good viewing points. The road is easy going and after the Rio Cares joins the Rio Deva, you will cross over a modern bridge on the approach to Panes.
Very shortly the AS114 meets the major N621. Turn right and head south on the N621 which follows the Rio Deva up into the Picos mountains. The road cuts through the famous Hermida Gorge as it winds its way upwards to the next major destination of the small mountain town of Potes.
We stay in a mountain lodge with the wonderful name of Penas Arriba, in the hamlet of Lon (also called Leon). This is west of Potes, take the CA185 towards Fuente De, and at the hamlet of Baro go Rt, over the Rio Deva into a minor road (Barrio de Lon). It is then a climb up the mountain road into Lon.
We stay for 2 nights which allows sight seeing in and around Potes. Also the option of the cable car ride upto the heights of Fuente De. |
