1. This route passes through Halstead at the start but the urban environment very soon gives way to pleasing North Essex countryside. As expected in this part of the county, there are many hills en route, several of which are quite tough but, fortunately, reasonably short. In exposed stretches, such as Earls Colne Airfield, watch out for some stiff breeze. NB. I have made an error on the route map. Please ignore the part that runs along the A1124 for a couple of miles from Earls Colne towards Halstead and follow the more southerly, winding route from EC to the point just before Halstead where the road rejoins the A1124.
Landmarks/Sites to see?
If there is time, Coggeshall town is well worth exploring. There is a public bench indicated on the map in the town centre. Sit there for a while and take in the pleasant surroundings. When the route reaches Earls Colne, it runs parallel to the High Street - it might be worth adding a few extra yards to see the interesting collection of buildings in the main road. There is a friendly cycle shop called Lobbs in Halstead High Street. On the map is a point about two miles from the start where the road sign could be confusing. Bear left at that point. |
