1. From London to Chelmsford fairly difficult as we didn't find many scenic routes and loads of traffic on the routes we did take. Tired out at Chelmsford so took a train to Witham and cycled through to Maldon.
Lovely little town and a great place to rest our heads and legs in a comfy bed and breakfast - all in all approx 7 hours cycling - inc getting lost/ taking the wrong turning twice for about 30 - 60 minutes.
Next morning we headed out from Maldon - Gouldhanger, Tollshunt D'Arcy (lovely little town/ village) - Abbington Reservoir - Layer-de-le-Haye, Colchester - Greenstead- Elmstead Market (from Colchester this wasn't a pleasant cycle route so we detoured from Frating Green through to Thornington (beautiful route) - St Osyth - Clacton-on-Sea. Day 2 approx 6 hours cycling.
Overall a great adventure, but better preplaning next trip - stick to small roads and head out for the villages as these parts of the journey give you the most energy as the beauty is breath taking. A fair amount of small hills throughout the route. Ice-cream on the beach to celebrate and a 1,5 hour train back to London Liverpool Street (bikes and people snoozing happily on route home) |
