Cycle Steps
1. Start out at the car park on Nursery Lane, Sprotbrough, by the canal. Follow the Trans Pennine Trail towards Barnsley, the old tow path will take you past Sprotbrough flash nature reserve and Cadeby quarry. Follow the tow path until you reach the impressive viaduct, then take the path up the hill to cadeby. This is quite a long challenging climb. Through the small village of Cadeby, straight over the cross road towards High Melton. At High Melton cross over the main road and take Sheep Lane. This is a quiet, mostly down hill back road which goes through an area known as Melton Brand. At Spring lane, take a left towards Cusworth. Follow the road under the A1 and up the hill towards Cusworth Hall, turn into the hall. There is a nice visitors cafe at the hall. From Cusworth Hall go down the hill and look for a sign for the Cusworth cycleway/trans pennine trail. This route will take you down the hill by the side of the hall grounds. At the bottom go past the fish ponds and look for the football pitches, there is a track next to the pitches. The track leads to the old railway cut, now the TPT. Take a right, signposted Barnsley. Follow the dirt cycle path, taking the left spur down the slope towards the river don. At the River turn right under the old railway bridge and then the large A1 over pass. Follow the tow path back past the lock to your start point at Nursery Lane, where it's very tempting to go and visit the Boat Inn pub/restaurant.
