1. Newent Loop South (Full)
This route offers easy riding, mostly on quiet roads and lanes with safe crossings over the A40 and very few cars or lorries, except at times in Mitcheldean. The B4221 can also be busy on weekdays at the start and end of the working day. Visibility at junctions is mostly excellent but you should wear brightly coloured clothing and use your lights to be seen in dim conditions. Everyone should wear helmets!
Starting from the centre of Newent head past the Tudor Fish and Chip shop out along the B4216 (Culver Street, then Newent Lane) for 2.3km. Turn left at St Anthony’s Cross and follow Kent’s Green Road all the way to the T junction with Taynton Road opposite Taynton and Tibberton Village Hall (4km). Turn left towards Tibberton and then right into Huntley Road after 1km. At T junction, turn left and follow to Bulley Lane, turn right. Follow Bulley Lane to A40 at Birdwood. Cross A40 to Chapel lane and continue to Upper Ley, then Frewins Lane, Northwood Green, then right at T along Boseley Road. Follow signs to Flaxley. At T, turn right along Flaxley Road to junction with Abenhall Road. Cross over into Lower Spout Lane and follow round till it becomes Jubilee Road. At A4136, turn right downhill towards Mitcheldean, left after 200 metres into Baynham Road and then right at Stenders Road. Left at T with High Street, then left after 0.5km onto Ross Road (B4224) for 2.5km. Right onto B4222 and cross A40 at Lea through to Aston Crews and Aston Ingham. Cross B4221 to Kews Lane and follow round to Kilcot Inn. Turn left along B4221 towards Newent. Turn right at the traffic lights down the High Street (B4216) to the town centre.
Total distance: approx. 39 km (24.28 miles)
If you prefer to ride this route the other way round (anti-clockwise), follow Watery Lane out of Newent to Clifford’s Mesne, then over the ridge and down Oaks Lane to Aston Ingham. Turn left onto B4222, then Aston Crews - Lea - Mitcheldean - Flaxley - Birdwood - Tibberton - Newent (as above in reverse order). For safety at Mitcheldean, especially if there are younger riders in your group, you may consider dismounting and using the pedestrian crossing near the roundabout to get over the A4136. |
