Kildare to Birr (day 2 Crossing Ireland) Cycle Route
Cycle Steps | |
Again I attempted to follow country lanes and minor roads throughout. Kildangen was the first town I passed through where I stopped for breakfast. Easy cycling then took me Portlaoise for lunch. A nice town with everything you could ask for. More easy and pleasant cycling to Ballyfin. After Ballyfin the route becomes steeper and harder as it climbs over the Slieve Bloom Mountains, as a result of which I have given this route a grade 7 for difficulty. Before the descent though there is a piknic site to rest at and admire the views to the west. A long gliding descent (watch out for army tanks hidden in the forests) brings you to the village of Kinnitty where I stopped for some coffee. Wish I had time to have stayed longer. Easy cycling thankfully leads on to Birr. A good cafe just as you turn right towards the centre of the town, on the left hand side of the road. Birr was a another nice and welcoming town. |
